The Fiat 124 saloon model was introduced in 1966 on the Geneva motor Show. The Fiat 124 range was extended with a station wagon and a 124 Sport Spider designed by Pininfarina later that year. On the Geneva show of 1967 the 124 Sport Coupé, designed by the Fiat Styling centre, was presented. Where the Fiat 124 saloon and station wagon were fitted with a common 1200 cc four-cylinder engine with overhead valves and pushrods, the 124 sport Spider and the 124 Sport Coupé featured an advanced 1438 cc unit with twin overhead camshafts (driven by a toothed belt) and a five-speed gearbox instead of a four-speed unit. In 1969 the Sport models were succeeded by the updated series 2 models with new styling details and a new 1608 cc 110 bhp engine option which was derived from the Fiat 125. The 124 Sport Coupe was updated again in 1973 and a 1756 cc engine became available. The Sport Coupé was built until 1975. Good and well-preserved original examples are rare and very desirable.
